Initial Thoughts


My initial thoughts on Learning in Outdoor Education is that it will most likely be one of the most fun courses I have taken throughout my educational history. I am from Minnesota in the United States, and I am pretty certain I have never taken an experiential learning course before. Although I wouldn't say that I am lacking experiential learning experiences. I grew up playing lots of sports back home, and always surrounded myself with more adventurous people than myself who would constantly force me to go outside of my comfort zone. The past few summers I have gone on three consecutive road trips with some of my best friends to different areas in the United States. These experiences have really sparked my interest in the outdoors, and is the main reason why I decided to take this course. In terms of what I personally add to the group, I would say that I am a pretty easy going person that is usually up for the challenge. My expectations for this class are to be challenged. Just based off of this weeks lecture it appears like the field trips will actually be pretty interesting in terms of group dynamics, and not just about pretty views. Overall I am excited for this course.

Royal National Park Reflection

My initial reaction of Royal National Park was that it appeared to be this interesting mix between bush and almost rainforest terrain. That was obviously until we started our walk and from then on all eyes were on the cliffs. This terrain could only be more different than what I am used to if we were surrounded by enormous mountains in Royal National Park. I am from Minnesota, in the United States. I am generally used to green forests and many rivers and lakes. Minnesota is known as the land of ten thousand lakes, and is the starting point of the Mississippi river. My state is also very flat around the area I live in and has a full range of seasons the complete weather range is from around -30 degrees to 40 degrees celsius. Blue Mountains Reflection

               My first photograph is one of me coming through the little squeeze that we did for the challenge day one. To be completely honest I was a bit nervous about climbing through this little spot for just a moment and then I kind of just told myself I would be fine and to just go for it. This change in mindset so quickly released any sort of fear. It reminded me about how I was so nervous to essentially decide to go skydiving and then once I decided to, I wasn't afraid at all through the whole experience. This really kind of solidified this notion that for me once I seemingly just say yes and decide to do something it can really have great power. Growing up I was always a pretty cautious kid and its experiences like these that I have learned that I just need to be all in and the fear disappears.
